Questions to Ask a Potential Solar Installer

Site Location

• Is my home/business appropriate for solar?
• Are there any issues?  What are they?  Will they impact performance of the system?
• Are there changes or upgrades to the roof you recommend before the solar array is installed?

Solar System

• What system size do I need?
• What is the expected energy output?  How does it compare to my historical needs?
• What is the cost of the system?  What is the cost breakdown of major items?
• What is the cost of the system on an installed per watt basis?

Certification and Warranties

• Do the products you are installing have UL, IEEE or IEC certification?
• Which major manufacturers/equipment do you use 
• What is the warranty on the solar panels and the inverter?

Installer Team

• Who is installing the system?  Are they certified?  What are the license numbers?
• How long will the team be onsite?
• What insurance cover do you have for your installers?
• Provide references - what other solar homes in the area have you installed?

Utility Programs

• What solar programs are available in the area?
• How is grid connection and metering handled?
• What rebates exist and how are they collected?  Who will collect them?
